A Note From Your PTA President

I love my job as your PTA President! However, as I complete my second term, the PTA by-laws require that I step down at the close of this school year. In fact, next year we will have a total of 7 positions open on the PTA board: President, Treasurer, Secretary, 1st VP (Handbook), 2nd VP (Assemblies), 3rd VP (Ways and Means), and Parliamentarian. We need your help in filling these positions so that the PTA can continue its support of the school through family nights, book fairs, talent show, arts program, assemblies, the carnival, etc.

I have to admit that I didn't think I was ready to take on the President position a year ago, but with all the support I received from so many of you, being your PTA President turned out to be an awesome experience for me.

There are so many parents here who are willing to help in so many ways!

If you think one of the officer positions might be too much to take on, there are ways to share the duties.

Here are brief explanations for each of the positions.

President: Responsible for leading the PTA toward specific goals. The president is the presiding officer and the official representative of the association. Responsible for watching over all the committees. Leads monthly PTA meetings as well as attending monthly council meetings.

Treasurer: Keeps permanent records that track gross income, receipts, and disbursements of the association. Prepares the budget for adoption by the association. Pays all bills and makes deposits.

Secretary: Attends PTA meetings and records minutes. Prepares a list of unfinished business items for the president and assists with preparing the agenda.

1st VP (Handbook): Responsible for gathering all information for the Van Buren Handbook and getting it printed for every student at Van Buren.

2nd VP (Assemblies): Responsible for setting up assemblies for all grade levels.

3rd VP (Ways and Means): Responsible for all fundraising.

Parliamentarian: Reviews and studies the bylaws and standing rules annually. This position is usually appointed by the president.

For a more detailed description of each of the positions, please contact me by phone or email.

Please think about the children and what they would lose out on if we didn't have a PTA. The teachers benefit, our children benefit and we benefit just from the fact that we are making a difference in our children's lives, our school, and our community.

I look forward to speaking with any of you regarding taking on a board position!
